For anyone working in the healthcare space, or even those working to support healthcare providers, it is vital to predict what the priorities will be for major healthcare systems moving forward. In this time of great change to how healthcare is delivered and paid for, the status quo is undergoing fundamental shifts for all involved. A recent investigation by Becker’s Hospital Review provides some great insight into what health systems, both large and small, are thinking about.
One top interest is artificial intelligence and how it will impact efficiency and effectiveness. But another big focus is partnerships, especially innovative partnerships that will shift how care is provided. One such partnership is with technology, including processes that can support a limited workforce, provide virtual care, monitor patients remotely, and share data. Another partnership is with retail outlets to gain access to consumer experience expertise, supply chains, and access to consumers/patients. Yet another partnership opportunity is with community-based organizations who are adept at supporting patient access and addressing social needs. Not one of the players I just listed are actual healthcare providers! Another big shift is moving loci of care to the community, especially as value-based payment models encourage the creation of a true healthcare continuum. This creates a disruption to the referral stream, allowing provider/payer systems to manage patient experiences to a much greater extent. This requires a much more holistic approach to care, incorporating mental health, social health, and equity issues. Having worked in healthcare, especially with the care of the seriously ill, for over 30 years, I have never seen such a fundamental shift in how care is provided, who is providing that care, and how it is paid for. Every aspect of healthcare is impacted, including new players who have never before been a part of the field. We are at a bifurcation point and those who do not find their new fit are at risk of not being a part of what comes next. Knowing this, it is important to know what major leaders are thinking and how you and your organization will fit in.
